The Universidade Federal do Cariri was established on July 05th, 2013, by a federal law n. 12.826, by the former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
The Medical School was created before in 2001, where it remains until the present day in Barbalha.

In 2006, the Universidade Federal do Ceará created Civil Engineering, Business Management, Library Science, Agronomy and Philosophy were the first courses. After them in 2009 came Materials Engineering, Music, Design, Communication, Biology, Mathematics, Chemystry, Physics, History. In 2010 came Public Policies and Management. In the beginning of 2019 started Accounting, Computational Mathematics, Computer Science and Letter – Language Studies.
The courses offered in the undergraduate level were distributed among the various units of the campus.
